Tools We Use

Our Mascot 'Buster'

2 way radios are a good thing to have. They have ranges up to 2 miles to keep us in contact if we get lost or run into wild life we think we can't handle. It's also a good thing to have to tell our partners we have come across something and we should shoot at the same location for a comparison of photos. It's just plain safe to have these around, no matter if we think we are safe or not. Always have security.
Part of security. Whomever is security for the investigation has this unit at the assigned security post. It monitors all 2way conversation. It also has a weather alert function to keep us out of storms. Part of 'Boo Hunting' deals with elctromagnet energy from storms. This helps alert us if we run into really bad weather.
Speaking of security.... 911 is just a call away. Just make sure there is full coverage in plain and mountain areas. ALL cell phones should be set on 'vibrate only' during investigations!!!!!!! We use Smart Phones with internet access so we can check the latest solar flare activity, as well as, satellite pinpoint imaging for various anomalies.
Strong spot lights not only come in handy for the security area, but they seem to work great for shooting video with string lights. These we use as safety lights on field investigations.
This radio stays with the security person. It has AM, FM and two shortwave bands. It features a hand-operated power generator that lets you run the radio for one hour by simply turning the crank for one minute. Comes in handy when spirits try to drain your battery power.
Every paranormal group should have at least one good emergency wind-up radio on hand, and the new Freeplay EyeMax AM/FM LED Radio is the best wind-up radio of its size. Crank it for 30 seconds and get up to 35 minutes of radio and/or light from the built-in LED flashlight. It also has a solar panel. No more buying bulk batteries! This unit will run for up to 25 hours when fully charged by either winding the crank or using the solar panel.

A First Aid kit is a must have. We never know what we will walk into, brush up against, get cut on.....etc. Some investigations take place at night and we really cannot see very well. It's a good idea to be safe than sorry.

There's nothing more frustrating than having our batteries die when we have a ghost talking to us or a UFO flying over head. An outrageous amount is not the key. Have a few back ups in the vehicle. DO NOT TAAKE THEM WITH YOU! Spirits love to drain batteries. Keep them in a safe zone away from the investigation. If needed, go back and change batteries rather than running to the store to get fresh. Nothing can be more annoying only to find things have stopped happening while at the store.

Go ahead. Laugh all you want. You wont after you need one and don't have one. We keep extras. We never know how many are going with us and who will be afraid of the dark. LED flashlights are the best for us. They last a long time under battery power (we know how spirits love to suck up energy) and the light is much cleaner and brighter in a general area. Better than one bright center and darker outer edges.

Power supply cords are never around when we need them. Buy a few cheap extras and keep them hidden. We have ours in a travel ghost hunting case for use when we do need them at the last moment. Just make them a part of your equipment and you will never have be without them.

A 35 MM cameras is a good comparison to a Digital camera. We carry both at the same time. If we capture something on digital, we shoot the same location and angle with the 35 MM. This not only saves money in printing costs but allows us to have enough of a comparison to either credit or discredit our shot. Most 35 MM cameras have a stronger flash than digital. We use the 35 MM for night shots more than the Digital. Most times we'll use the Digital as a scout for phenomenon then shoot the same shot with the 35 MM.

Just one of the digital cameras we use. The more we have the more w can check to see if there truly is something there. This camera we take on daytime preliminaries only. It's basically a cheap digital that we wouldn't get worried if it got ruined. We bring out the big guns if we get something and we book a full investigation.

We use these cameras. we have memory cards up the ying-yang for insurance not to run out of memory while on a shoot. We average between 500 - 750 photos a location on one single hunt. We then later go through and check for phenomenon. It has a viewer on the back to check for anomalies. If there is something noticeable, we break out the 35 MM and shoot from the same direction or the night vision digicam.
For recording video, we use our JVC compact VHS and Sony ight shot digital/analog camcorder and a Canon XL HD 3CCC Movie camera. They're small enough and portable enough to carry anywhere. We can record up to 165 minutes of video before the battery has to be recharged. They both have portable adaptors so we can recharge in the car with convenience.

Generic tripods will save your arms while recording video or even taking a run of pics on a shoot. We have 4 tripods total (1 being used to holf the camera for this pic) and we use them all constantly. This leaves us free to set up audio and other things while recording or taking run time photos.

30mW 650nm Mid-open Red Laser Pointer Stars Kaleidoscopic Laser Pen

A tape recorder is most convenient when used for interviews. It's not exceptionally good for EVP's. The tape hiss can over power the phenomenon and create distortion. If possible, use a digital recorder for EVP's and analog for interviews.
These are what we use to hold the data from the mixer or general recordings. We can hold up to 35 minutes of high quality data per recorder and upload it to our computer to listen to at a later time. (good use for a laptop) It is amazing what you get without tape hiss.
To record analog tapes for long periods of time we us the VersaCorder Quarter Speed Cassette Tape Player/Recorder. Using a high quality 90 minute cassette we get 180 minutes per side. We can wither set it down and go, using the built in microphone, or set it up to the mixing board and use our high quality mics. It also has the unique ability to listen, via headphones, to what is being recorded with a .04 second delay. The only draw back is uploading the audio to the computer for analyzing. Upload is usually real time playback via Audacity.
We use a Behringer Mixer and a low form Mic stand for recording. We've found that the lower the stand, the less wind pickup appears. A mixer gives us the ability to increase our sound frequency making it easier to hear. It also boosts the recorded volume to make it a lot simpler to separate the phenomenon from background noise in a recording.
We use many types of Mics depending on what we're recording. This is a Behringer ECM 8000. The ECM8000 accepts phantom power (+15 to +48V) and offers a true omni-directional pattern. The ultra-small element assures that the mic housing causes minimal interference with uniform response. It offers the widest range of frequency we've found yet. We use it for everything from EVP's to Crypto Zoology.
This RCA ATM4C Mic has a good upper range. We use it for mines, caves and other areas with echo problems. Weve found the frequency of the echos don't impede the mic as bad as the other 2 we use.
In my many years of working in radio, I learned about this little treasure. It has awesome lower, mid and high range capabilities. It was the best we've found until the Behrenger ECM 8000 came along this year.
The MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount. The 3/4" gold-sputtered diaphragm creates a professional sound suited for digital and analog recording. 30Hz-18kHz frequency response. 130dB maximum SPL.
Tripod Boom Mic Stands allows us to set our mics up above where animals or small children cannot effect them and give false redings, but also give them a sturdy place to be mounted and pointed in directional areas that can be specifically targeted to collect sound. We can also set them up high or down low for omnidirectional settings.
The Zoom H2 is an easy-to-use, versatile stereo digital audio recorder that fits into the palm of your hand. Perfect for investigations, the H2 records high-quality WAV and MP3 files to meet any professional need. The H2 has 4 built-in microphone capsules, whose signals are decoded and combined to create a fantastic stereo image. You can record from the front at 90°, the rear of the unit at 120°, or you can record 360° to create a surround audio experience, pin-pointing location in a room. Great for frequency analyzing.

A compass is great for picking up magnetic readings from various hot spots. The needle of the compass will move each time North is relocated and, according to reports, will begin to spin when it encounters a ghost or some sort of anomalous energy field. It is quite a consistent occurrence with much higher-tech devices.
A Digital compass like this is great for documenting exact locations in the field. This one also has a watch and temperature gage included. Less stuff for us to carry. It's a good idea to look for items with multiple uses.

Generally used for reading electricity pollution, this is a good inexpensive device that can be used to measure ectoplasm as well as spirit energy.
The CE Multidetektor Prof II seems to be more sensitive than the regular EMF meter we were using. We can pick up changes in electromagnetic fields up to 100 feet away. When the meter goes off in a direction, we start shooting in that direction. It does work the best for us at the present. The night time Ghost Pic on our photos page was taken that way. The LED makes it very user friendly at night. Basically, it's used to find disruptions in natural magnetic fields at any location. It can also be used to provide readings of paranormal activity. Be aware. The meter can also be triggered by things that may not be supernatural. Practice learning what the readings on the equipment mean and which are true and false.
Geiger counters are devices that detect radioactivity, another term for ionizing radiation, the four major types of which include Gamma, X-rays, Beta, and Alpha radiation. Virtually all Geiger counters detect Gamma and X-rays, this model detects Alpha and Beta radiation as well. A geiger counter can be very useful in an investigation for monitoring the changes in the background radiation of a location. Other researchers and investigators have found that ambient radiation seems to lower or raise in the presents of ghosts.
There is no instrument that is used as frequently in paranormal reserarch as an electromagnetic field
meter.  The CellSensor is a low cost , high quality analog meter that will aid researchers in the location of
"hot spots" in any location.  the external probe makes it simple to eliminate the false positives cause by
naturally occurring or man made variations in the electromagnetic field
This little meter measures the level of ELF magnetic field radiation from power lines, computers, kitchen appliances, and more! The easy to read scale, unique built-in audio signal and auto shut-off make it simple to use and a great way to find hidden sources of ELF frequency magnetic fields.
Through our testing we determined that the K-II EMF does in fact function well compared to other similar models of EMF meters. It is responsive when put head to head with similar models such as the Electrosensor, Ghost Meter, and CellSensor, all of which are other analog EMF meters.
The Mel-8704 was specifically designed for Paranormal Investigators. Many important features have been incorporated into this durable, precision hand held instrument.
The TriField Meter was designed to do field measurements for special research. It detects changes in extremely weak static (DC or "natural") electric and magnetic fields, and signals with both a tone and the movement of a needle-type gauge if either the electric or magnetic
field changes from previous levels.

We use this Infra Red Thermometer to calculate specific surface area temps as well as it's general settings of surrounding temps. It calculates in both C and F and is backlit so during night time use it becomes very user friendly.
This thermometer has an option to record temps in 2 locations at once. It also hold data to record at a later time if necessary.

Using a night scope helps to pin point sound in total darkness. It's easy to see what making the noise or floating in the trees, etc. It's just nice to know that what you are hearing is a board hitting the side of a barn. An animal running through the bushes or an alien about ready to probe you in the dark.

We document all of our locations with a GPS reading. This way we can go back to the same location within 8 feet of where we were and take the same picture during day or night for comparison. Plus, anyone who wants to see for themselves can use this information to see where we have been and investigate the location for themselves.

With this security system, we can observe 4 locations at once. We have a VCR that tapes full screen or quad screenfor review at a later date. This system is a little much for the wallet, but I felt we could benefit from it. Quad Observation System shows professional quality performance. The monitor has a real-time quad processor, 350 TV lines of resolution and a built-in switcher that rotates the picture between up to four camera locations. The four wired cameras each feature a 1/3'' CCD image sensor, 380 TV lines of resolution and night vision illumination. We are able to see in the dark with the infrared emitters. It also has built in microphones that allow for audio recording.
A VCR is used to record from the security monitor. This gives us a recodring of all 4 locations of video and sound to analyze at a later date. We can record one screen at a time or all 4 at once.

This is the laptop we take with on investigations. We use it for many reasons. To document forms instead of writing everything out., We have a wireless internet connection for remote locations so we can go to our conditions page and check for atmospheric conditions. We also use it to download evp recordings and photos from the equipment to free up memory in the other devices.

This external CDRW allows us to take the laptop into the field and unload our photo and video memory cards into the computer to be burned to disk for storage and review at a later time. It also allows us to carry the data to other computers. We can record up to 70 minutes of digital quality audio in one recording of EVP's with no interuptions, case popping or tape hiss during investigations. We hook our mics up to the beringer mixer, which is hooked into the laptop and then recorded using WaveLab. The data is saved onto hard disk, then burned onto cd using the external drive.

Best used when device is placed outside of a door or in a hallway that you want to secure. Anyone who passes in front of the device's sensor will trigger the alarm. You can also use motion detection indoors and outdoors to detect energy fields or cold spots. Backup documentation is essential, so use a camera or video camera for best results.

Binocs help locate items far off in the distance. When doing out door investigations it is easier to spot via binocs rather than walk the entire location. It's also good for UFO spoting as well as Yeti spotting.

A Black Light, or 'Stink Finder' as we call it, comes in handy for locating phosphorescent particles that can cause odor.

Dowsing Rods. With a properly trained person, these have been awesome in locating active areas, unknown grave sites as well as Hartman grid lines, etc. These are custom made by AAPI's very own Bob. We've done a study and also an article to understand how dowsing/divining rods worked and used what was said to be the best materials. These are totaly awesome. Bob did a very good job.

This pendulum was made by AAPI's Stephen out of necessity. After doing research on dowsing/divining rods we also found what material would work best for pendulum work. After finding a pendulum of the right wood combinations we then created a balanced cord that should prevent unnoticeable intentional movement.

Metal Clip board to write on and organize your paper work. This will protect and be sturdy enough to write on. Ours is a trifold clip board with a pocket to hold reports and pens/pencils as well as a fold out pocket to store writen reports and a metal flap that folds over the front to provide a surface to write on.

Our paranormal scene sample kit is in the process of being photographed. It contains items used to gather evidence. It includes plastic and glass bottles, plastic bags in various sizes, chalk, string, scoops, spoons and tongs. It will be uploaded very soon.

Our grab-n-go kit. When we get a call for a last minute 'prelim' or a call for help. This kit contains a Clip Board for reports, Pens and Pencils, mini First Aid kit, Analog Compass, Digital Compass, IR Thermometer, Dual Analog Thermometer, ELF Meter, atrifield Meter, Gauss Meter, Digital Camera, GPS, Memory Cards, Digital Recorders, External Mics, Digital Tape Measure, Multidetektor, 2 Way Radios, Flashlights, Laser Grid, Ghost Box and Zoom 360. It's always set to go so we can grab on the way out the door.

This Oscilloscope gives us the ability to measure electromagnetic wavelengths in various experiments and on investigations where our tools refuse to work. There are many attachments that allow us to measure frequencies, not only on humans, but in the air as well. We are in the process of totally refurbishing this HeathKit O-12 to it's full operating capacity. We look forward to recording audio and video frequencies with this unit, as well.

Isn't this sad. This is what we generally carry on investigations. If you ever need to lose weight, this is a great field to do it. How many trips to the car/suv and how many trips to the location? Then how many trips back to the car/suv and then again back into the house? Not to mention all the walking, climbing and hiking. But it's worth every bit of it!
